Description
Overview
The Siemens SOMATOM Definition Edge is engineered to bridge the performance gap between conventional single-source CT scanners and high-end dual-source systems. Designed for demanding clinical environments—such as busy emergency rooms, comprehensive stroke centers, and high-volume cardiac clinics—the system delivers fast coverage without compromising sub-millimeter detail.
At the heart of the Definition Edge is the Stellar detector array. By digitizing the X-ray signal directly within the detector photodiode (TrueSignal technology), electronic background noise is virtually eliminated. This allows low-signal data—such as scans of obese patients or low-kV pediatric runs—to retain diagnostic clarity. Paired with the zero-heat-storage STRATON™ tube, fast 0.28-second rotation speeds, and pitch values up to 1.7, the Definition Edge handles back-to-back acquisitions with zero thermal downtime.
Key Features & Advanced Technologies
-
Integrated Stellar Detector Array: Fully integrated CT detector that converts analog X-ray signals directly to digital format at the photodiode level (TrueSignal technology). Cuts electronic background noise and expands dynamic range up to 102 dB.
-
TwinBeam Dual Energy: Splitting the incoming X-ray beam into high- and low-energy spectra before it reaches the patient allows the system to acquire single-source Dual Energy data in a single pass at dose neutrality. Enables tissue characterization, iodine quantification, and virtual non-contrast (VNC) reconstructions.
-
Ultra-Fast Acquisition Speed (Pitch 1.7): Moves the patient couch at up to 23 cm/sec, allowing a full thorax-abdomen-pelvis exam to be completed in under 2 seconds to reduce breath-hold motion artifacts.
-
ADMIRE & SAFIRE Iterative Reconstruction: Model-based iterative reconstruction algorithms that lower radiation dose exposure by up to 60% while maintaining sharp edge definitions and a natural noise texture.
-
iMAR (Iterative Metal Artifact Reduction): Suppresses streak artifacts and beam hardening caused by dense orthopedic implants, pacemaker leads, and dental work, preserving adjacent soft tissue detail.
-
Adaptive 4D Spiral Plus: Moves the table continuously to provide wide-range dynamic volume imaging up to 48 cm Z-axis coverage—ideal for whole-brain stroke perfusion, vascular bleeding localization, and shunt evaluations.
-
CARE Child & 70 kV Protocol Suite: Automatically selects low tube voltages (70 kV) and custom weight-based mA modulation to protect pediatric and dose-sensitive patients without losing image contrast.
